Only by adopting such a rigorous phenomenological approach, Reinhold believed, would the critical philosophy remain within its self-imposed limits of possible experience and avoid stepping over the barely discernible boundary of the transcendental and into the forbidden realms of the transcendent. How, though, do we know that we are subject to the moral law? Kant says we know that we are obliged because we are free; but we know that we are free through our conscience. But our conscience believes and cannot prove that the moral law applies to us. A vicious circle! It is also questionable, these critics pointed out, that a Kantian has a right to believe in the existence of God, providence and immortality. According to the "Dialektik" of the first Kritik, such a belief would amount to hypostasis, the confusion of a regulative and constitutive principle, or the false assumption that there is some reality corresponding to a moral ideal.
