Always inebriated and only barely intelligible, Hance fulfils a certain stereotype, and his résumé is a composite of various aspects of the immigrant population in England at the time: he lives in an area and performs several of the jobs associated with mid-Tudor strangers. 67 Rather than representing an abstract concept of vice or virtue, Hance stands outside the allegory as a character conspicuously grounded in London life, and his presence confronts the play of virtues and vices in Wealth and Health with the practical benefits and problems arising from immigration.
Good Remedy interrogates Ill Will and Shrewd Wit, sends them to prison, and then tends to Wealth, Health, and Liberty. The play ends with a direct address to and prayer for the queen and her council. 54 This analysis works well within the allegory. Ill Will, after all, appears to have no geographical identity so it is natural that he poses a challenge to a sense of Englishness. When asked who he is, he responds, “I am your evil will / your will, & your will, & your will” (299–300), a claim that puzzles Liberty, who notes that each individual’s will is different.
Both Ill Will and Good Remedy express the same sentiment and use many of the same words. 71 Whether Baskerville is right or not, in the exchanges with Hance Good Remedy acts and sounds like Ill Will. The allegorical dichotomy of Wealth and Health breaks down precisely where the play breaks with the genre of allegory, that is, where the multigeneric plot runs into early modern England’s multicultural reality. To suggest that the play subtly condemns Good Remedy would be reading too much into a moment that is superfluous to the overall plot; to suggest that the moment therefore does not matter, however, would be folly.
