Plato, at the time he was writing, had a far more flexible use of these concepts, a use which enabled him to pass easily from discussion of individuals and states in the Laws to topics that we, unlike Plato, would find out of place, notably his presentation, in the Timaeus, of the kosmos itself as a unity held together by bonds of friendship. 71 It will reappear in some later views of the kosmos and man’s place in it, but is not be found in Aristotle’s writings, which have too often dominated the approach adopted by modern scholars intent on studying the notion of friendship in the ancient world.
